写実的に表現された陶製のカエルです。

のちに三蹟（さんせき）のひとりに数えられることとなる能書家、小野道風（894-966）は、才能に行き詰まって思い悩み、書道を諦めかけていたことがありました。
ある雨の日、柳にしがみつこうと繰り返し飛び跳ねるカエルの姿を目にします。
無理だろうと思っていたところ、風が柳をしならせ、カエルは飛び付くことができたのです。
自分はまだこの蛙のような努力をしていないと、カエルから勇気をもらい、書道をやり直すこととしました・・・

という逸話があります。
「柳に小野道風」は、「蛙に小野道風」「柳に蛙」といった通称もあるのです。
